Why organisations consider a managed model
An SBC is a critical part of many Microsoft Teams Phone, SIP trunk and hybrid voice environments. It must remain secure, reachable, correctly licensed, properly certified and operationally healthy. Some organisations prefer to retain full responsibility. Others use a hosted or managed model to reduce operational burden.
Hosted and managed are not the same
Hosted SBC generally means the SBC platform runs in a provider-managed data centre or cloud environment. Managed SBC means operational activities such as monitoring, configuration reviews, certificate management, upgrades, backups and incident support are handled under an agreed service scope. A customer may use either model, or both together.
When it can make sense
- The internal IT team does not have dedicated voice or SBC specialists.
- The organisation wants predictable operational ownership after deployment.
- Certificate expiry, software lifecycle and configuration changes need structured control.
- Multiple sites, carriers or cloud platforms create additional complexity.
- The business wants proactive monitoring rather than support only after a failure.
What should be defined clearly
A managed service should state who owns the platform, licences, carrier relationship, security decisions, backups, change approvals, incident response and service reporting. Availability targets and support hours should also be agreed rather than assumed.
How Quaivox approaches it
Quaivox can assess the existing environment, recommend an appropriate hosted or customer-owned architecture, define the operating model and provide flexible managed support covering health checks, monitoring, certificates, planned changes, troubleshooting and lifecycle reviews.
